History of Aluthnuwara

When presenting Aluthnuwara Devalaya, historical priority should be given to Uthpalawanna Vishnu Deviyo. The devotional tradition of Devi Dadimunda should be presented respectfully as part of the living guardian-deity practices connected with vows, protection and community faith.

Aluthnuwara Devalaya is regarded as an important centre in Sri Lankan devale culture. Its principal deity tradition is associated with Upulvan, or Uthpalawanna Deviyo. Over time, within the Sri Lankan Buddhist-Hindu cultural setting, Upulvan became identified with Vishnu.

The history of Aluthnuwara is linked with Portuguese-era destruction, Kandyan revival and the ritual world of Kandy. Because of this heritage, Aluthnuwara is often discussed alongside the Maha Vishnu Devale near the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
